Thiruvananthapuram: The police have stepped up security in the coastal neighbourhood of Cheriathura for the smooth conduct of the Urus festival at the nearby Beemapally Dargah Sharif, which starts on Tuesday. The locality had witnessed violence between two groups on May 16. Six people were killed and at least 20 injured in the clash and the consequent police firing on the Cheriathura beach. The Urus festival concludes on June 6. City Police Commissioner M.R. Ajith Kumar is heading the security arrangements. Two Deputy Commissioners of Police, four Assistant Commissioners of Police, eight Circle Inspectors, 30 Sub Inspectors and 500 armed policemen, including one company of the Rapid Action Force (a specially trained wing of the Central Reserve Police Force used solely for control).
