Warm wishes: Noble Thamburaj, Vice Chief of Army Staff, at the ECHS polyclinic during his visit to the Army Veterans Welfare Complex in Vellore on Monday. —

VELLORE: Noble Thamburaj, Vice-Chief of the Army Staff and Army Commander of the Southern Command, visited the Army Veterans Welfare Complex (AVWC) in Katpadi near here on Monday and listened to grievances of ex-servicemen and their family members.

During an interaction, Lt. Gen. Thamburaj told them that the Ministry of Defence was planning to shift the Defence Pension Disbursement Office in Vellore to the AVWC within a year, so that all facilities required by ex-servicemen and their family members were available in one complex. When ex-servicemen expressed difficulties faced by them in reaching the AVWC, which was far away from the main road (Thiruvalam Road), and the delay caused by frequent closure of the railway level crossing gate on the way to the complex, Lt. Gen. Thamburaj said that during his earlier discussions with C. Rajendran, Collector of Vellore, the latter had promised to construct an underpass beneath the railway track and to blacktop the approach road to the AVWC.

One of the ex-servicemen pleaded for the establishment of another Central Stores Department (CSD) canteen in Vellore district for the benefit of ex-servicemen and their family members living on the eastern side of Vellore district in areas such as Sholinghur. He suggested that a CSD canteen be set up in Arcot. There was so much of a crowd in the CSD canteen on the premises of AVWC, and he had to spend a whole day to get his turn to buy articles. To this, Lt. Gen. Thamburaj replied that there was only one CSD canteen in all districts and major cities, including Delhi and Mumbai. Ex-servicemen who were working in companies in other parts of Vellore district should apply leave for a day to visit the CSD canteen in Vellore, he said.

To requests from ex-servicemen and their family members for increasing the quota of supply of Indian Made Foreign Liquor such as rum, brandy and whisky, he advised them to drink less.

Another ex-serviceman wanted another shed to be constructed for the ex-servicemen visiting the CSD canteen since there was a large crowd on many days.

Later, Lt. Gen. Thamburaj visited the Employees Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) polyclinic in the AVWC and inspected the facilities.

Earlier on arrival, Lt. Gen. Thamburaj was received by A. Srivasthava, director, ECHS, Nithin Kohli, Station Commander, D. Prakasam, Assistant Director of Ex-Servicemen’s Welfare, Vellore, Victor, Manager, CSD Canteen, Vellore and Sathyanarayana, Commanding Officer, ECHS, Vellore.
