Sirsi: If Uttara Kannada district is accorded hilly district status, development works will be doubled as it will come under the Union Government for the development of basic infrastructure, said Umesh Bhat vice-president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. Justifying the demand for hilly district status, Mr. Bhat told The Hindu that the people of the district had sacrificed their life and property during the freedom movement. Ankola and Siddapur taluks were in forefront of “Kara nirakarane satyagraha” during 1930. After Independence also, the people sacrificed their house and property for the mega projects such as Kali and Kodasalli hydro eclectic projects. Kaiga nuclear plant, Sea Bird, Konkan Railway and so on, he said. The district has 80 per cent natural forest land and only 20 per cent revenue land. Hence, the district should be conserved for posterity. This would be possible by according hilly district status he said. The farmers of the district were not getting agricultural loan waiver owing to some technical problem. A Vidarbha-type package was needed to implement the scheme, he said. He also said that the Congress should groom leadership among youth. The district Congress leadership lacked dynamism to ensure the victory to the party candidate in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, he added.
