Promoting a cause: Energy Minister K.S. Eshwarappa inaugurating a conference of members of self-help groups in Shimoga on Monday. SHIMOGA: Minister for Energy K.S. Eshwarappa said here on Monday that concerted efforts should be made for the consolidation of the activities of the self-help groups so as to ensure a better prospects to the their members. He was inaugurating “Pragati Chintana Samavesha”, a conference of the members of self-help groups organised by the Sri Dharmasthala Grameenabhivruddhi Trust to review the progress in the formation of the new self-help groups. Mr. Eshwarappa said that there had been a phenomenal progress not only in the formation of the self-help groups but also in making their members self-reliant ever since the trust launched its activities in Shimoga district. He, however, suggested that the involvement of the women beneficiaries in the activities of the self-help groups should not take away the pleasure of their domestic life. He said that the profit earned by the members of the self-help groups should be utilised for useful activities. “Then only the cherished dream of Dharmadhikari of the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala D. Veerendra Heggade will be fulfilled,” he said. EducationEmphasising the need for imparting education to women, Mr. Eshwarappa said that it was unfortunate that women who did not appreciate the importance of education as a fundamental right which denied them suitable place in society. The Minister said that social and economic problems in their domestic life should not come in way of their getting educated. He suggested that suitable marketing facilities be created for products of the self-help groups. He assured that the city municipal council would be asked to come forward to take up the construction of a suitable market place for the products of self-help groups. Mallikarjun Murugharajendra Swmiji of the Bekkinakalmath lauded the initiative taken by Mr. Heggade in forming a separate trust for rural development to help the rural artists and artisans. Municipal Councillor P.V. Vishwanath presided over the function, As many as 2.04 lakh people are enrolled as members of several activities being taken up under the aegis of the trust in the district between 2007 and 09 who have mopped up savings to the extent of Rs. 10.30 crore.
