Action will be initiated against violators, says district Collector


Many of the labourers are migrating from the district in search of livelihood

Some 2,875 ‘Gumpu Maestries’ are staying in the district at present


MAHABUBNAGAR: Action would be initiated and criminal cases would be booked against the “Gumpu Maestries” who have not registered their names under Inter State Migration Labour act, said Collector K. Damayanthi.

Briefing about the Gumpu Maestri and Migration of labour issues to the media persons here on Monday, she said that it is compulsory to register the names of labour who were working within the district.

She informed that if any of the maestries had not registered his name, criminal case would be booked against them. Further the Collector informed that the State Government was serious about the Adilabad’s labour tragedy incident and instructed to effectively implement the NREGS in the district.

She added that there were 2,875 Gumpu maestries in the district according to a survey conducted during 2007 and 34,033 labourers were migrated from the district during 2007.

Wooing labourers

She further informed that some of the contractors were taking away the labourers from the district by paying them money in advances but the labourers were not being paid minimum wages. The migration is very high from Narayanpet, Wanaparthy division and in Lingal and Amrabad mandals as well, she added.

She asked the labourers to register their names before migrating from one place to another as the registration would help in protecting them and in getting insurance during health-related problems.

Giving reply to a question, the Collector said that the NREGS is being implemented in an effective manner in 30 mandals and in certain mandals the implementation of the scheme is though continuing , the process is going on at a slow pace.

Checking migration

She said that government is also contemplating to provide advances to Chenchu labourers in Chenchu areas. She said that steps would be taken to arrest migration of labourers from the district by effectively implementing of the NREGS and by giving quick payments to the labourers under the scheme.
