Corrections and clarifications

  • The fifth paragraph of a report “Iran, Pakistan ink gas pipeline deal” (May 25, 2009, page 1) said that the construction of the 56-inch thick pipeline will be completed in five years. It is a 56-inch diameter pipeline.

  • The seventh paragraph of a report “Nitish urges Manmohan to expedite projects in Bihar” (May 25, 2009) was “Seeking a reconsideration of the Finance Ministry’s decision not to accept Bihar’s request to consider waiving Rs.760 crore in debt for the years 2006-06 and 2006-07, he said that at present it was given only for 2004-05.” It should have been “2005-06” in the first instance.

  • We were instructed to read the caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “A packed hall, the changed pecking order and search for seats” (May 23, 2009) as “Clockwise, from top left”, but it only ended up making an error, and confusing readers. (The caption was: “The New Team: The Members of Parliament who were sworn in Union Ministers by President Pratibha Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Friday ….”) They point out that all we needed to say was “Both rows, left to right.”

  • A technical error made the first paragraph of a box story “Fervent Hope — Mother’s message to Mamata” (May 23, 2009) read as “Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, has expressed the hope that her daughter ‘will do good for the people and for West Bengal’ on taking over as Union Minister.” It should have said “Gayatri Devi, mother of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has expressed the hope ….”

    The dateline, Kolkata, was missing.

  • The sixth paragraph of the lead story “Congress-DMK talks break down” (May 22, 2009, page 1) was “The DMK wanted five Cabinet berths to accommodate the two outgoing Union Ministers, Dayanidhi Maran (Mr. Karunanidhi’s grand nephew) and Mr. Baalu, besides Mr. Karunanidhi’s two children, M. Azhagiri and M. Kanimozhi.” It should have been Mr. Raja and Mr. Baalu. (The error was in the early editions.)

  • The third paragraph of a PTI report “Royal Indian Navy veteran dead” (May 21, 2009) said Commander Goord oversaw RIN’s expansion from eight minor warships to 117 combat vessels and 30,000 personnel by the end of World War I. It should have been World War II. (Commander Anthony Brian Goord of the Royal Indian Navy (RIN) died on May 8, 2009, at the age of 97, which means that he was born in 1912. During World War I (1914-1918), he was a boy!)

  • The name of the company is TVS-E Servicetec. An item “New MD for TVSE Services” (“Snippets – Business” page, May 20, 2009) gave it incorrectly as TVSE Services.
