Binayak Sen comes out of jail in Raipur on Monday.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Binayak Sen, vice-president of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, who has been in detention since May 2007 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for his alleged association with the naxalite movement in Chhattisgarh.

Even as senior counsel Shanthi Bhushan, appearing for Dr. Sen, was about to make his submissions, a vacation Bench consisting of Justices Markandey Katju and Deepak Verma ordered Dr. Sen’s release on bail on his furnishing a personal bond to the satisfaction of the court.

Plea ignored

The Bench ignored the plea of senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the Chhattisgarh government, opposing bail on the ground that trial was about to be completed. Justice Katju told counsel: “We know the facts of this case. He has been in jail for two years. We are granting him bail.”
