Magic of May

Kovai with Gul Mohurs and Laburnums in full bloom in May is a visual delight. The City dresses up in reds and yellows that vie with the sunset.

Mingling with myriad green, washed clean by summer showers, these trees present startling islands of colour under a canvas of blue skies. Kovai is a beautiful city with a character of its own. Just to move a bit faster in our desperate rush towards Mammon and progress let us not harbour grandiose dreams of the metro rails (The Hindu, May 13) which would devastate our city. A well-planned sky rail in conjunction with a ring rail network is what Kovai needs. Besides meeting communication needs it would give us the time “…to stand and stare” at the magic of May.

M. Vania,

Sowripalayam.

Nature camp

The initiative of Siruthuli in organising a free summer camp for school students with the theme ‘Teach them young’ is laudable. The assignments selected for the camp are more relevant and important now than before in view of the deteriorating conditions.

Sitting in a class room and learning from textbooks hardly compare with the first hand information one can get by relating with Nature. Positive and direct experiences in the outdoor are essential in developing a positive attitude towards environment and instilling love for nature.

We should nurture Nature and ensure that our natural habitat continues to prosper. If we do not awaken to the needs of Mother Earth we will be handing down a desert to the future generation.

Park in Ramnagar

Coimbatore Corporation is keen on providing parks in reserved sites in various wards.

The project is being undertaken in right earnest in most wards of the city. The reserved site of over 2.5 acres in Ramnagar was cleaned after much persuasion and the work of forming the park was taken up a few months ago.

The work was suspended when half of it was complete. The sudden stoppage of the work has shattered residents’ hopes.

The Ramnagar residents request the authorities concerned to complete the work early.

The site does not have a board giving details of the project, the name of the contractor, the date of completion, the budget estimate etc.

T.V. Kalyanakrishnan,

Ramnagar.

Road median

In continuation of Mr. C.N. Karunakaran’s views on road median (April 13) I suggest the following.

The road median should be high and light proof so that headlights of all kinds of vehicles can be checked by the median from passing to the adjacent lanes. This will ensure that drivers, riders and pedestrians moving in the opposite direction in the night are not affected by the light.

P.S. Subbaiyan,

Peelamedu.

Wanted: Playground

There is a vacant space admeasuring 22,000 square feet which has been allotted for construction of a park near Thendral Nagar TN Housing Board area. Many housing colonies have been developed but without a park or a playground.

As pin bushes grow fast in these areas, the areas cannot be used as playgrounds. Some time ago the civic authorities had these bushes removed but they sprouted again in the rain.

S. Sruthi,

Ganapathy.

Traffic constable

A traffic constable had been posted at the Bharathi Nagar bus stop. But later the constable was removed from there.

Now people have to struggle to cross the road at the stop. Often two-wheelers find it difficult to cross the road because of heavy traffic in peak hours. (8 to 9 p.m.). Some time ago a woman was involved in an accident on the spot.

There is always heavy traffic in the area.

Will the authorities post a constable to regulate traffic which will help save many lives?

R. Suresh,

Ganapathy.

Town bus service

Trichy Road is one of the four important roads in Coimbatore City.

The government had allotted 700 buses to Coimbatore

and Erode two months

ago.

There are Singanallur bus stand, workshops, car showrooms, mills, schools and colleges on Trichy Road. There are no airbuses or LSS buses from Sulur to Coimbatore town and Singanallur busstand to Gandhipuram and Ukkadam (via) Ramanathapuram. People living on Trichy

Road, in Singanallur and Ramanathapuram find it difficult to go to Gandhipuram.

I request the transport department authorities to run airbuses and LSS buses from Singanallur busstand

to Ukkadam and Gandhipuram and Sulur to Gandhipuram (via) Ramanathapuram.

R. Narayanaswami,

Ramanathapuram.

Sewage treatment plant

The City Corporation has been running a pumping station on Nanjundapuram Road, opposite Parsn Complex and adjacent to Mayflower Sakthi Garden Complex, in an open land of about six acres belonging to the Corporation, for treatment of sewage from all over the city.

This poses a serious health hazard to the area where over thousands of houses are located. People in the area have made many requests to the City Corporation to shift the station to a faraway place.

The requests have fallen on deaf ears and the Corporation authorities continue to use this land as a pumping station to pump the sewage to Vellalur sewage farm.

The authorities have plans to convert this station into a mega project as an open sewage treatment plant to collect sewage from all over the city (about 40 million litres every day). The work on the project in Nanjundapuram is in full swing without even observing the norms of the Pollution Control Board. The proposed plant will adopt open aeration process, which will cause communicable diseases.

The sewage gas will contain hazardous mixture of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, varying amounts of methane, hydrogen sulphide, etc. which are detrimental to human health.

The City Corporation

should shelve the project

and shift it to a distant location not inhabited by people.

Coimbatore. (Readers can mail to cbereaders@thehindu.
