Mechanical sweeper launched

Cleaner roads: Mayor M.Subramanian inspects the working of a mechanical sweeper on Monday.

CHENNAI: Chennai Corporation on Monday launched a mechanical sweeper procured at a cost of Rs.33 lakh for improving road cleaning operations.

The civic body has planned to procure 10 such equipment for taking up cleaning operations on all important roads in the city.

Mayor M. Subramanian inaugurated the operations of the new equipment at a function in Ripon Building on Monday.

Electrical ladder

He also launched the operations of a new vehicle fitted with electrical ladder for repairing streetlights in narrow streets of slums and other congested residential localities.

The electrical ladder is capable of reaching up to a height of seven metre.

Fifteen such vehicles would be procured at a cost of Rs.6.87 lakh each to cover all the congested localities of the city. The mechanical sweeper is capable of cleaning all parts of the road in wet and dry conditions at the speed of 4 km a hour. Pebbles and gravel on the footpath and median can also be removed effectively using the equipment.

“The Corporation has installed 12,500 new streetlights in various parts of the city after 2006,” said Mr. Subramanian.

The civic body has been taking measures for solving the problem of solid waste management, he said.

Commissioner of the Corporation Rajesh Lakhoni participated.
