Meal scheme staff stage protest

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Activists of the Karnataka State Akshara Dasoha Employees Association staged a protest near the Old Central Jail here on Monday and urged the State Government to fulfil their demands, including a raise in pay.

Several lakhs of employees are contributing to the success of Akshara Dasoha programme in the State.

They have been working since several years and the Government had not made any effort to increase their salary, said the CITU State General Secretary V.J.K. Nair.

Akshara Dasoha Employees Association president S. Varalakshmi criticised the Government’s efforts to privatise the programme and said the staff should be paid the minimum salary as per labour law guidelines.

They should be given medical and maternity leave, and compensation in case of accidental death.

Later, the protestors submitted a memorandum to the State Education Commissioner G. Kumar Nayak.

In another protest, members of Karnataka State Building and Other Construction Workers’ Federation staged a demonstration on Mahakavi Kuvempu Road near Devaiah Park where a Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) Limited worker, Prakash (27), was killed in a building collapse on May 23.

Federation general secretary S. Shankar demanded that compensation be given to the victim’s family.

The metro rail corporation had violated safety norms at the site, Mr. Shankar has alleged.
