Removed from varsity Syndicate
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Bangalore University on Monday removed M. Jayalakshmi Devi from the membership of its Syndicate. Ms. Devi was implicated in the Rs. 2-lakh bribe case to give a favourable report to a private institution that had sought university affiliation.
The order comes in the wake of a communiqué from the Secretary to Education Department in this connection.
Meanwhile, the Lokayukta police found cash, travellers’ cheques and foreign currency allegedly in the possession of Ms. Devi. They arrested Ms. Devi, her son and a receptionist on May 18 in connection with the bribe incident.
Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde said the police have recovered Rs. 12.5 lakh in cash, U.S. $ 604, five travellers’ cheques with a face value of $ 100 each and Sri Lankan Rs. 40 from Ms. Devi’s second bank locker.
They are looking into an agreement executed on stamp papers valued at Rs. 5 lakh. The police had recovered 100 grams of gold ornaments from the other bank locker of Ms. Devi.
Mr. Hegde said the police were looking into Ms. Devi’s assets now. The police will open the third locker on Wednesday, he said.
