Weaker sections get lion’s share in YSR Cabinet

HYDERABAD: Keeping his promise of giving the weaker sections their due share in the Cabinet, Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy inducted close to 50 per cent MLAs from these sections in his cabinet on Monday.

Dr. Reddy packed his team with loyalists who were with him through thick and thin in the last decade.

Out of the 35 Ministers, 18 were from the forward caste followed by backward classes (11), Scheduled Castes (four), Scheduled Tribes and Minority (one each). Reddys constitute the highest number with 11 getting the berth. Among the other castes, two Kapus and one each from Kamma, Vysya, Kshatriya, Velama and Brahmin have been accommodated. From the BC community, Munnuru Kapu, a dominant caste in Telangana, found three berths followed by Yadav and Setti Balija — two each. One berth each went to the Turupu Kapu, P. Velama, Gangaputra (fishermen) and Goud.

Dr.Reddy also accommodated two Mala and Madiga legislators each . The lone ST MLA to find a place in the Cabinet was P. Balaraju from the Bhagatha sub-tribe while Md. Ahmedullah was the only MLA belonging to the minority community in the Cabinet, apart from Dr. Reddy himself, who is a Christian. Like Dr. Reddy Mr. Ahmedullah hails from Kadapa.
