Manthani fields a Minister after PV

Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR: Manthani legislator D. Sridhar Babu has secured a berth in the State Cabinet and took oath of office on Monday evening.

Mr. Sridhar Babu entered politics in an unusual manner after the assassination of his father, former Assembly Speaker D. Sripada Rao, by naxalites in April 1999. He graduated in law from Delhi University and practised at Andhra Pradesh High Court prior to taking the plunge into politics.

Incidentally, Mr. Sridhar Babu was instrumental in the success of the party candidates in 2004 elections as DCC president. But, he was denied a Ministerial status and was accommodated as the TTD Trust Board member for a tenure and later as the government Whip.

Developmental works

This time, with both the Ministers and senior Congress leaders J. Ratnakara Rao and T. Jeevan Reddy losing in the elections, the lines were cleared for Mr. Sridhar Babu to attain a Ministerial post from the district.

Mr. Sridhar Babu is known for taking the initiative in developmental works in the backward Manthani Assembly segment ever since he became the legislator. He always associated himself with the people of his constituency, responding to their needs at all times. The party sources felt that under his leadership the party would be further strengthened in the district in all matters.

He got several educational institutions such as junior colleges, degree college, ITI, polytechnic college sanctioned in his Assembly segment and accorded priority to laying of roads.

He was instrumental in the execution of Sripada Yellampalli project and Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme to provide irrigation to his segment.

He married Shailaja Iyyanar, an IAS officer, who is presently with the Commercial Taxes Department.

Incidentally after three decades, the Manthani legislator had become Minister after P. V. Narasimha Rao from the same constituency.
