IIT JEE topper Nitin Jain with his parents in Faridabad on Monday. NEW DELHI: Nitin Jain from Faridabad has topped the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE 2009) for admission to the 15 Indian Institutes of Technology; the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University; and the Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad, in the results declared on Monday. Mr. Jain is from the IIT-Delhi zone. The second rank has been secured by Shubham Tulsiani from the IIT-Mumbai zone. The IIT-Chennai zone’s Gopi Sivakanth bagged the third spot. A total of 3,84,977 candidates sat for the examination conducted by seven IITs on April 12, and 10,035 candidates have been declared qualified to seek admission. They will vie for 8,295 seats in the IITs at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mandi, Mumbai, Patna, Punjab, Rajasthan and Roorkee, the IT-BHU, and the ISMU Dhanbad. Mr. Jain, a student of Modern Vidya Niketan in Faridabad, said he was expecting the top rank because that had always been his aim.
