Curfew relaxed in Punjab cities

CHANDIGARH: While the Army, paramilitary forces and police maintained vigil, no untoward incident was reported on Wednesday from any part of Punjab, which witnessed violent demonstrations in the wake of the attack on the head of the Dera Sachkhand Ballan, Sant Niranjan Das, in Vienna on Sunday. In the attack his deputy Sant Rama Nand succumbed to bullet injuries.

According to reports, the authorities relaxed curfew for long hours in the sensitive areas of Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Phagwara, Hoshiarpur and Malout cities and towns. Though some people came out to purchase groceries, market places wore a deserted look and educational institutions remained closed. However, traffic along the interstate Railways and highways that resumed on Tuesday, remained unaffected.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal called up Vienna to enquire about the health of Sant Niranjan Dass, whose condition is stated to be “stable and improving.” Mr. Badal talked to the Sant’s attendant for over 10 minutes, an official release said here.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh each to the families of those who died in the violence in Punjab. The government also announced “adequate and liberal compensation” to those who suffered loss of property.
