NEW DELHI: For the second year in a row, the Chennai region has had the distinction of topping the Central Board of Secondary Education’s Class XII as well as Class X examinations. The CBSE declared the Class X results for the Delhi, Allahabad and Guwahati regions on Friday, while those for Chennai, Ajmer and Panchkula regions were announced on Tuesday. There has been an overall increase of 1.76 pass percentage points from 87.08 in 2008 to 88.84 per cent this year. As has been the trend in the past few years, girls, with a pass percentage of 89.78, outshone boys, who registered 88.18 per cent. Parnil Singh from the Kendriya Vidyalaya at Sri Vijayanagar in Vizag is the all-India topper with an outstanding 98.8 per cent. Six students, including three from Chennai, two from Allahabad and one from Panchkula, have scored 98.6 per cent. As many as seven students have bagged the third all-India position with 98.4 per cent. The overall pass percentage for the Chennai region is 95.60, ahead of the other regions, Ajmer (94.14), Allahabad (89.54), Panchkula (88.95), Delhi (87.70) and Guwahati (60.42). A total of 8,24,421 candidates were registered for the Class X exam this year. The pass percentage for candidates from the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas is the highest in the country with a remarkable 97.84 per cent compared with 97.54 in 2008. Kendriya Vidyalayas have secured an overall 96.35 per cent, up from 96.07 per cent. Government schoolsIndependent schools have also seen a slight rise in their overall pass percentage from 91.77 in 2008 to 91.89 this year. Government schools have bettered their record across the country with a pass percentage of 80.08 which stood at 75.31 last year. It is the same for government-aided schools whose pass percentage has considerably improved from 72.57 in 2008 to 78.16 now. A total of 1,681 students appeared for the Class X exam in the special category. The pass percentage of these candidates this year is 90.12 per cent, better than the national average. As many as 38 differently-abled students, including 21 from Chennai alone, have scored more than 90 per cent. The CBSE is awarding 12,135 merit certificates this year, the highest number — 4,443 — being in Mathematics, followed by 1,894 in Science and 1,770 in Social Science. Several students have obtained a perfect score in various subjects. In Maths, 4,443 students achieved centums. Drop in Science centumsThe number of candidates who got a perfect 100 in Social Science has gone up by three times from 598 in 2008 to 1,770 this year. In sharp contrast, only six students secured centums in Science against 287 students last year.
