Fireflies in the Garden (English) Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Julia Roberts, Carrie-Anne Moss Director: Dennis Lee With a line from Robert Frost for the title, and a story involving a writer and his unresolved issues with his English literature professor father, you would not be blamed for expecting an erudite, Changing Places kind of film. However, as you wade through this film’s mercifully-short running time, you are bound to be disappointed. Fireflies in the Garden tells the story of Michael and his difficult relationship with his father, Charles. There are other stories such as Michael’s troubled marriage, his nephew Christopher’s guilt, his aunt Jane’s parenting worries, his sister Ryne’s issues with Charles, his mother’s extra-marital relationship and so on and so forth. Fireflies in the Garden would have worked better as a book. As a film with a heavy-duty star cast that overwhelms it, it is difficult to remain engrossed. M.A.C.
