BANGALORE: Art had a strong role to play at the District Anti-Tobacco Cell - Bangalore Medical College Research Institute’s (BMCRI) function here on Saturday to mark “World No Tobacco Day”. This year’s theme was “Tobacco Health Warnings” through pictorial representations. Organised in collaboration with the Institute of Public Health, the event began with a poster competition that saw participation from various high schools and colleges . An “Education Pack” to raise awareness on tobacco related issues among students and a “Media Pack” comprising fact sheets on the influence of tobacco on livelihood, economy, taxation and public opinion were released. S. Shivaram, actor-producer-director, spoke about how the portrayal of tobacco use in advertisements and films influenced the public. S. Prakash, Additional Project Director, Department of Health and Family Welfare and State Nodal Person for Tobacco Control, stressed the need for a smoke-free Bangalore saying though laws existed they had to be strictly enforced. G.T. Subhash, Dean-cum-Director, BMCRI, said education, enforcement and elimination were the basic steps to fight tobacco use, while K.L. Pujar, Joint Director, Department of Pre-University Education, stressed the role of the education sector in this regard. Vikranth S., BMCRI student, topped the Overall Best Poster category.
