Vijayawada
VIJAYAWADA: The industrialists, denizens, traders and others sections of the city demand that the four-laning of the National Highway-9 from Nandigama to Malkapuram (Nalgonda-Ranga Reddy district border) shall be completed within a set time-frame so that this will ease traffic movement to a great extent in the most high density stretch between Vijayawada and Hyderabad. It has been a long-standing demand of the people of the city that the remaining part of the NH-9 should be widened to enable the users to reap full benefits out of the convenient traffic movement. Recently, the Rs.1,200 crore four-laning project was awarded to the GMR Infrastructure Ltd triggering hopes of the beginning of the works at the earliest. The NH-9 was already four-laned from Vijayawada to Nandigama and for some distance from Hyderabad side. It is being expected that once this project is completed, the travel time between the two cities will be greatly reduced. There has been a steady increase in trade and transport of goods between Vijayawada and Hyderabad. In recent years, non-transport traffic has also gone up by leaps and bounds. Though a major part of the NH-9 is yet to be widened, traffic density has increased between the two cities in view of its convenience when compared with other modes of travel. It is the experience of travellers that they take less time if they travel by road between the two cities rather than air or train. Industrialists, lorry operators and traders are particularly happy that the widening of the NH-9 to complete the remaining stretch will boost trade further. Mostly, goods transport is on the increase with most of this traffic movement coming from Mumbai via Hyderabad to Vijayawada. They are taking more time to move goods currently between the two important cities. After the widening of the NH-9, traffic is expected to increase substantially in both transport and non-transport segments. As of now, heavy and dense traffic is reported on the NH-9 and NH-5 highways as well. But when it comes to non-transport traffic like cars, this traffic is more on the NH-9, between Vijayawada and Hyderabad.
