Punjab MPs: ensure those guilty in Austrian murder are punished

Special Correspondent

Foreign Office in regular touch with embassy in Vienna: Krishna

They want funeral of Sant Rama Nand to be conducted without trouble

Also, an official of the External Affairs Ministry must accompany the body

NEW DELHI: A delegation of parliamentarians from Punjab met External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and said the government should ensure that criminal investigation into the attack on Sikh leaders in Austria was taken to the logical conclusion and all the accused booked.

The leaders wanted the Centre to engage with the Punjab government to make sure that the funeral of Sikh leader Sant Rama Nand is conducted without any turmoil.

The third request was for a Ministry of External Affairs official to accompany the body when it arrives here on Thursday. Among those who met Mr. Krishna were Congress spokesperson and Ludhiana MP Manish Tewari, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Mohender Singh Kaypee (Jalandhar MP), Vijay Inder Singla (Sangrur) and Pratap Singh Bajwa (Gurdaspur).

Minister of State for External Affairs and MP from Patiala Preneet Kaur was present during the meeting.

Mr. Krishna told the delegation that the Foreign Office was in regular contact with the Indian embassy in Vienna and the government was “closely monitoring” the developments.

An attack in a gurdwara in Vienna on May 24 had left the second in command of Sikh sect Dera Sachkhand dead and its chief Niranjan Das seriously injured. The news of the attack triggered violence and arson in parts of Punjab and Haryana leading to the declaration of curfew and flag marches by Army columns in some places. Of the 14 Army columns, many have been withdrawn while some are still there as a precautionary measure.
