Slain soldier’s body arrives

Special Correspondent

CHICKABALLAPUR: The body of a soldier from Bangalore, who died while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, arrived at Bengaluru International Airport on Monday night.

Lance Naik S. Gururaj (27), father of a six-month-old baby boy, was killed on Sunday morning after he was hit by bullets fired by terrorists at Kukkawada, off Rajpura, in Kashmir. Senior Army officials received the body at the BIA. After the Army personnel accorded due military honours at the airport, Gururaj’s body was handed over to his family around 7.30 p.m., BIA’s Central Industrial Security Force Commandant Digvijay Singh said.

Gururaj, a resident of 1st Main, Chamarajpet, joined the Indian Army in 2001. He had also been selected as a constable in the State police. Despite his mother’s opposition, Gururaj joined the Army, his brother-in-law Chandrashekar told The Hindu.

Gururaj’s father, Sunderaraj, recently retired as an assistant sub-inspector from the Bangalore police’s City Armed Reserve. Gururaj’s wife, a homemaker, and six-month-old son live with Sunderaraj’s family in Chamarajpet. The last rites will be performed on Tuesday.
