‘Understanding is what matters for a marriage to be successful’
Shrinivas Desai with his bride Veena in Hubli on Monday. HUBLI: When the priests asked the bride Veena Gururaj Kulkarni to garland the bridegroom Shrinivas Krishnaji Desai at Shankar Math here on Monday, Ms. Veena had to ask him to kneel down so that she could garland him. No, Mr. Desai is not a very tall person. But Ms. Veena is, by normal standards, too short. She is just 3 ft 11 inches. No, it was not a “love marriage.” In fact, many of the invitees for the arranged marriage were surprised when they first saw the pair. For them, the pair looked unusual. In fact, Mr. Desai’s mother and siblings were initially hesitant to accept the alliance proposal. However, it was Mr. Desai who was firm on his decision. Mr. Desai, who earns a living by running a mobile eatery at Durgadabail in Hubli, has studied up to SSLC, while Ms. Veena has completed PUC. For the family members, it was an “unequal pair”. But they finally yielded, as Mr. Desai remained firm. As the wedding rituals were completed, Ms. Veena’s parents were the happiest as their daughter had found a life partner. Ms. Veena was also happy and at one point became emotional. Speaking to presspersons, she recalled the pain taken by her parents to find a suitable boy for her. She was happy that she had found a person who could understand her. Mr. Desai said it was understanding that mattered most for a successful marriage and not the height. He hoped that his decision would be an inspiration to others.
