Special Correspondent

Buming Daies, principal of the Sacred Heart Pre-University College, inaugurating a function to mark ‘World No Tobacco Day’ in Shimoga on Tuesday.

SHIMOGA: Buming Daies, principal of the Sacred Heart Pre-University College, on Tuesday emphasised the need for educating the youth about the ill effects of tobacco use.

He was speaking after inaugurating a function organised by the Shimoga branch of the Fulfilling People’s Aspirations of India (FPAI) in association with the Malnad Cancer Hospital and Institute of Oncology at the Sacred Heart Pre-University College here to mark “World No Tobacco Day”.

Nadahalli Ravi of the Malnad Cancer Hospital and Institute of Oncology said it was unfortunate that the increasing use of tobacco, through smoking or chewing, posed a serious threat to health.

He said that it was disturbing to note that a majority of the victims of cancer and other diseases caused by tobacco were youths.

He said that people addicted to tobacco could quit it only if they made efforts in that direction.

He stressed the need for cultivating good habits such as reading and participating in cultural activities.

He interacted with students giving details about the ill effects of tobacco chewing or smoking.

Secretary of the Shimoga branch of FPAI Vishalakshi presided over the function.

Vice-president of the local branch of FPAI Kantikar spoke on “Youth and tobacco”. Senior member of the local branch of FPAI D. Hanumanth Rao was present.

Treasurer Ramesh Babu welcomed the gathering. Srinivas Murthy proposed a vote of thanks.
