CHENNAI: Young scientists should be encouraged to undertake research into fundamental problems affecting society and one of the most important problems now is climate change, said eminent scientist M.S.Swaminathan here on Tuesday. Addressing the curtain-raiser for the Youth Science Congress to be held from June 5 to June 7 at Sriperumbudur, Dr.Swaminathan said that the Congress, with the theme ‘Your planet needs you: unite to combat climate change,’ would focus on anticipatory research to tackle issues such as agrarian crisis and poverty reduction in the face of climate change. Experts from various institutions would address the technical sessions. Exhibition stalls with the latest rural innovations would also be set up. “We want to bring together the best of traditional knowledge and modern science,” Dr.Swaminathan said, adding that the Congress would provide a forum for interaction between academics and grassroots workers. On the last day of the Congress, the Association of Young Scientists to Combat Climate Change would be launched. P.Sathyanarayanan, Vice-Chancellor, SRM University, said that the Congress was being modelled after the Indian Science Congress. With a huge youth population, focus on research and development by young scientists was required. G.Rajasekaran, director, Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), said that the three institutions – MSSRF, SRM University and RGNIYD – had come together to conduct the Congress.
