CHENNAI: The massive qualification exercise for the main draw of the all-India Krishna Khaitan memorial junior badminton tournament continued through Wednesday with 304 completed matches. Two Tamil Nadu under-19 players, R.S. Mohan Krishnan and Arun Kumar, were identified by tournament Organising Secretary Sanjiv Sachdeva as good prospects for the main event. While Mohan Krishnan easily beat State-mate T. Meyyanbu 21-14, 21-16, Arun Kumar dropped a game before overcoming Safi Akram of Bihar 21-14, 17-21, 21-12 in the third round of the qualifiers. “Both players practice at Towers Club and are very hard working. They are also bright prospects at the senior National level. In fact, Mohan Krishnan has just returned from training at a National Camp in Nainital,” said Mr. Sachdeva. To make the cut, Arun and Mohan need to win two more matches (fourth and fifth rounds) on Thursday, the last day of qualification, after which the main draw starts. — Sports Reporter
