National Jan Morcha plans farmers’ meet in Delhi

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The former Prime Minister V.P. Singh’s Jan Morcha, which has re-invented itself as the National Jan Morcha, will organise a farmers’ meeting here on his birth anniversary on June 25.

The morcha, while dedicating itself to the cause of farmers, will evolve itself as a ‘third alternative,’ Mr. Singh’s son, Ajay Pratap Singh, told a rally in Hardwar.

He earlier merged the Jan Morcha with the Lok Jan Shakti Party and unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections from Fatehpur.

Mr. Singh would now be the president of the National Jan Morcha.

Participating in the rally organised by the Bhartiya Kisan Union’s Ambawat unit on Tuesday, Mr. Singh said the Congress showing in Uttar Pradesh should not be seen as a positive vote for the party. It gained from the anti-Samajwadi Party and anti-Bahujan Samaj Party sentiment.

The National Jan Morcha would not lend itself to caste and religion-based politics. It supported reservation on the basis of economic poverty, he said.

On June 17, the morcha and the BKU would join hands with farmer leader Mahendra Singh Tikait to hold a rally in Hardwar. This would be followed by the meeting in New Delhi.

Their main demands were provision of credit up to Rs. 5 lakh at low rates and subsidised diesel and power to farmers.
