NEW DELHI: World champion Viswanathan Anand defeated Hungary’s Peter Leko in the second game of their eight-game rapid chess clash to take a 1.5-0.5 lead on the opening day at Miskolc, Hungary, on Wednesday. Both games witnessed the opening lines of Grunfeld defence. The first game, where Leko opened with white pieces, ended in a 28-move draw. Anand looked better placed towards end of the contest but offered a draw with just half minute on his clock, as compared to two-and-a-half minutes of Leko’s. In every game, each player gets 25 minutes of thinking time plus 10 seconds bonus for every move made. In the second encounter, Anand seized the advantage from the king’s side and gained a pawn on the 21st move, advanced a central pawn to the seventh rank and went on to add add another pawn. A hapless Leko gave up in a hopeless position after 46 moves. The results: Second round: Viswanathan Anand (1.5) bt Peter Leko (Hun, 0.5); First round: Leko drew with Anand.
