Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal (second right) and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal (left) pay their respects to Dera Sachkhand leader Sant Rama Nand before his cremation at Bhawan village, the sect’s headquarters, on the outskirts of Jalandhar, on Thursday. BALLAN (JALANDHAR): Dera Sachkhand leader Sant Rama Nand, whose death in Vienna sparked violence in Punjab recently, was cremated on with State honours at the sect’s headquarters here on Thursday. An apparently unending stream of devotees braved the scorching heat to pay their last respects at Satsang Bhawan. The body was flown in here in a helicopter in the morning. The area, 15 km from Jalandhar, was virtually converted into a cantonment, with a large number of police deployed in each point of entry to Ballan. Rama Nand’s mortal remains, brought by a special aircraft from Vienna to New Delhi in the early hours, were received by Union Ministers Ambika Soni, Kumari Selja and Parneet Kaur. The former Punjab Minister, Bikramjit Singh Majithia, and Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujaral were also present, sources said. — PTI
