GULBARGA: Members of the district unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) will stage a protest here on June 15 urging officials of the Gulbarga City Corporation (GCC) to supply safe drinking water to the people, Shoukatali Alur, district unit secretary of CPI, has said. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Alur said that people of Gulbarga were receiving contaminated water owing to the “apathy” of the corporation officials. Because of this, many people were facing health problems such as jaundice, vomiting and dysentery and skin diseases. No steps had been taken to supply safe drinking water despite appeals to Mayor Sayeeda Begum, Deputy Mayor Pramod Tiwari and officials of the corporation, he said. He alleged that the officials colluded with private water suppliers who were making quick money. Mr. Alur said that he would file a petition with the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) seeking action against the Gulbarga City Corporation for not providing safe drinking water to the people. He said members of the CPI had launched a ward-wise programme in the city to raise awareness among the people on safe drinking water. He sought action against the officials for substandard work on various projects in the city. The projects had been taken up under the Chief Minister’s special package. The protest to be staged on June 15 would be intensified till people of Gulbarga received safe drinking water, he said.
