Implement industrial policy soon: FKCCI

Staff Correspondent

‘State lacks the zeal to achieve industrial growth’

Chairman of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry D. Muralidhar speaking at an interactive meet in Raichur on Thursday

Raichur: Chairman of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) D. Muralidhar said on Thursday that it was difficult for the State to pick up the required pace in industrial growth unless the district units of the chamber pressured the Government for speedy implementation of its industrial policy.

Speaking after inaugurating an interactive meet here on development of trade and industry in Raichur district, he said development of industries in the State had been affected in the past decade because of lack of proper utilisation of resources, creation of infrastructure and proper implementation of the industrial policy announced by the Government.

He said that Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra attained sustainable industrial growth as they aggressively promoted business and industrialisation. Karnataka was in the fourth position as far as Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) was concerned a decade ago. But it declined to eighth position gradually, which was below the average growth.

This was because the State lacked the zeal to achieve the industrial growth and its GSDP growth might decline further if the situation continued for a few more years. Stating that the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in the State was receptive to the suggestions made by the FKCCI, he said that the Government had announced a new industrial policy for the benefit of entrepreneurs. But it was difficult to achieve the expected industrial growth in the State because the Government was yet to implement its policy.

Mr. Muralidhar said that the backward districts still remained backward as no effective step had been taken to tackle industrial issues and problems faced by entrepreneurs.

Raichur district had infrastructure such as water, power, land and mineral resources, but it was lagging behind in respect of industrial growth and the Human Development Index compared to other districts of the State, he added.

Mylapur N. Murthy, president of the Raichur District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that there was a need for the federation to pressure the Government for early implementation of industrial policy.

Srinivasmurthy, vice-president, S.S. Patil, former president of the federation, Ramachandra Prabhu, former president, and Kamal Kumar, secretary of the chamber, were present.
