Be an umpire: Chiru

Chiranjeevi

HYDERABAD: “Don’t be a batsman or a bowler, but be an umpire and treat all sides equally,” was the appeal of Praja Rajyam president K.Chiranjeevi to the newly-elected Speaker N.Kiran Kumar Reddy in the Assembly on Thursday.

Making his maiden speech in the House while felicitating Mr.Reddy, he described the House as a “temple” and said that people have elected the members to discuss their problems. “Service to mankind is service to God.” There would not be unnecessary arguments if everybody was conscious of the precious time. Urging the Speaker to treat the ruling party as well as the Opposition equally, he referred to the Speaker having played in the position of wicket-keeper in Ranji trophy and wanted him to display “sportsman’s spirit” while running the House. Lok Satta president Jayaprakash Narayan, while hailing the qualities of the Speaker, criticised the mention of caste during the discussion and urged all members to keep aside their antagonism and work collectively for people’s cause. BJP floor leader G.Kishan Reddy also referred to the Speaker’s cricketing background and urged him to hold all the catches as the wicket-keeper without flooring any of them.
