INSENSITIVE ACT: Plastic waste carelessly thrown by visitors floats in a pond in the Nehru Zoological Park, posing serious hazards to tortoises and fish. Today is World Environment Day.

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) which has taken the initiative to improve Hussainsagar Lake and its catchment area has decided to have the lake as the theme for World Environment Day activities on Friday.

The celebrations aim at involving residents around the lake and partner voluntary groups working for the project to create awareness on disposal and recycling of waste and development of clean and healthy surroundings. The project for improvement of the lake, built during 1562 to fulfil the drinking water and irrigation requirements of the city, and got degraded due to rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, has been taken up with financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). On Friday, the HMDA is organising Hussainsagar Lake Walk from Eat Street on Necklace Road to Sanjeevaiah Park at 8.30 a.m. It will be flagged off by HMDA Commissioner K.S. Jawahar Reddy.

An awareness campaign on the Solid Waste Management around the lake and competitions for participants has also been lined up. They will be followed by inauguration of Science Park and prize distribution by C.V.S.K. Sarma, MA&UD Principal Secretary.

Cycle rallies

Cycle rallies starting from different parts of the city and culminating at the NTR Gardens for a meeting will mark the World Environment Day, said Farida Tampal, State Director of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) at a press conference.

The annual event, celebrated on June 5, 2009, was being hosted by the WWF in collaboration with AP Pollution Control Board (APPCB), AP Forest Department, AP Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC), Hyderabad Municipal Development Authority (HMDA), GHMC and others. “It’s great that so many government agencies and other organisations are on the same platform,” said Ms. Tampal.

Green exhibition

“There will also be a ‘green exhibition’ and quiz and painting competitions to create awareness about climate change.” This year’s theme is ‘Your planet needs you - Unite to combat climate change’.

Swaranjit Sen, Chairman of the APTDC, suggested that the Water Works Department should be a part of this initiative because leaking pipelines were a common feature in the city.
