Suspected key Lashkar operative held

Devesh K. Pandey

NEW DELHI: Mohammad Omar Madini, a suspected key Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) functionary operating from India and Nepal for the past several years, was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police from near Qutb Minar in South Delhi on Thursday.

Security and intelligence agencies suspect he was in direct touch with top functionaries of the terror outfit in Pakistan as also with Hafiz Saeed, head of the Jamat-ud-Dawah, known as a front of the LeT. From Madini, the police have reportedly seized $8,000, some Nepali currency and a diary containing a list of suspected Lashkar conduits and militants active in and outside the country.

Madini reportedly disclosed that he sneaked into Indian territory recently on a “talent hunt.” Madini had allegedly been directed by his LeT bosses to create a large network of operatives in major cities through whom deadly attacks could be carried out in the future.

The key Lashkar operative’s job was to spot “talent,” cultivate them, initiate them to join the outfit and “fight” for its cause.
