It will probe marks scandal and evaluation errors LIC reports for two years to be probed BANGALORE: A commission of inquiry headed by a retired High Court judge would be set up by the Bangalore University to investigate certain irregularities in the university alleged to have taken place in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. The decision was taken at the university Syndicate on Thursday after members Y.A. Narayan Swamy and D. Ayyappa raised the issue of M. Jayalakshmi Devi, a former Syndicate member, who was nabbed by Lokayukta police while accepting money for granting permission to an educational institution to start a college in a newly constructed building recently. The commission would be going into details of all the marks card scandal of 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 examinations, irregularities in the evaluation including awarding marks to blank answer sheets and alteration of marks in certificates. Besides, the commission will enquire into appointment of custodians as well as the role of custodians in the examinations from 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. At the Syndicate meeting, the members expressed that the reports of the chairman of local inquiry committee members for grant of fresh affiliation, renewal of affiliation to various colleges for 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 should be inquired into. The Syndicate unanimously accepted the proposal. A Bangalore University release said the Syndicate felt that a number of appointments had taken place in 2007-2008 without legally approved by Board of Appointments. Sir M.V. ChairSir M. Visvesvaraya Chair to undertake research in space science will be established in Bangalore University following a memorandum of understanding signed between BU and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The ISRO will provide an annual grant of Rs. 5.5 lakh, which will be used for research projects by students, BU Registrar Sanjay Vir Singh said.
