VS wants new projects to battle climate change

New effort: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurating a seminar organised by the KSCSTE in connection with World Environment Day in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has highlighted the need for strategies to minimise the impact of climate change on Kerala.

Speaking after inaugurating a seminar organised by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) in connection with the World Environment Day celebrations here, he exhorted students, researchers and officials to formulate new projects based on the threats posed by the climate change phenomenon.

Mr. Achuthanandan said the scientific community had issued a clear warning against the disastrous consequences of global warming and other problems caused by man’s tampering with nature.

The Chief Minister released a report on the Environmental Monitoring Programme on Water Quality, a project taken up by the KSCSTE. N.H. Ravindranath, Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, received the first copy and delivered the keynote address.

Principal Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Dr. E.P.Yesodharan, who presided over the meeting said global warming and errant rains had become a matter of grave concern.

Executive Director, Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM), K.V. Jayakumar and Principal Scientific Officer Kamalakshan Kokkal were present.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of the photography and painting contests organised by the KSCSTE in connection with World Environment Day.

Scientists and teachers and student members of the National Green Corps from city schools attended the seminar.
