Green brigade: Governor N.D. Tiwari flagging off a rally taken out on the occasion of ‘World Environment Day’ in Hyderabad . HYDERABAD: Governor N.D. Tiwari on Friday called upon the AP branch of Indian Red Cross Society to effectively spread awareness among people and undertake immediate measures to prevent the ill-effects of climate change on health and environment. Flagging off a rally at Raj Bhavan to mark the World Environment Day organised by the society, he said climate change would be the prime cause of human suffering hereafter. ‘Higher global temperatures are expected to have both direct and indirect effect on health. An imminent clear need therefore exists to raise both funding and institutional capacity to prepare for the anticipated effects of global warming’, he said in a message. Mr. Tiwari was happy that the society was conducting its year-long programme emphasising on everybody’s role in this regard in a pithy expression ‘our world –your move’. This initiative coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Solferrino, 90th anniversary of the International Federation of Red Cross and 60th anniversary of the Geneva Convention. Members/volunteers of the society, students and representatives of NGOs, such as the Association for Promoting Social Action, Devnar Foundation for the Blind, Aathmeeya Manasika Kendram, took part in the rally. Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy flagged off a ‘green rally’ from his camp office, jointly organised by the Department of Environment and AP Pollution Control Bard to mark the day, with the theme ‘Your planet needs you, unite to combat climate change’. The rally concluded at Guru Govind Singhji Sports Complex, Ameerpet.
