Speaker row: TRS blames TDP

HYDERABAD: A day after it joined the Telugu Desam in not accompanying newly-elected Speaker N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to his Chair, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti appears to be in an introspection mode on whether its decision was right.

Several TRS leaders are of the opinion that the “TDP has unnecessarily dragged them” into the controversy for which the partners of the Grand Alliance attracted criticism.

TRS legislature party leader E. Rajender quickly tried to nullify the adverse impact of the decision to keep off from accompanying the Speaker by showering praises on Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy during his speech.

And, a delegation of the party legislators met Mr. Reddy in his chambers on Thursday when they were said to have expressed regrets for their conduct in the House.

But the TRS MLAs are sore over the way they were forced to become a party to the episode though they had no inkling of what the TDP was planning.

“We were getting up to join Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and leaders of other parties, but a senior TDP member advised against doing so as it would not send proper signals about the alliance. Moreover, the TDP MLA claimed that TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao was informed about the proceedings which eventually turned out to be a false claim,” a party leader said.

Avoid confrontation

The incident brought to the fore the uneasy relation between the partners of the Grand Alliance with several TRS MLAs criticising Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu for being “unable to digest the fact that his party did not get the people’s mandate”. “Mr. Naidu should understand the reality and avoid confrontation from the beginning,” a TRS member remarked.
