Novel initiative: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit launching the “Green Shopper Campaign” to promote use of bio-degradable products and say no to plastic bags on the occasion of World Environment Day in New Delhi on Friday. NEW DELHI: Walking a green carpet welcome and clad in a lush green sari, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit set the tone for World Environment Day celebrations in the Capital on Friday by inaugurating Chalta Phirta Environment Campaign – a novel initiative of non-government organisation Green Forum to popularise mass use of jute bags in place of plastic. As part of the mobile (chalta phirta) campaign, two modified Maruti Versa vehicles will travel the streets of Delhi. The Chief Minister’s voice to be broadcast through a loudspeaker attached to the vehicles will urge customers to give up the use of plastics and buy jute bags. Green Forum convenor Udayan Namboodiry said: “The Chalta Phirta Campaign is part of the ongoing Green Shopper’s Campaign which was launched last year to popularise use of bio-degradable alternatives to plastics in Delhi. By the end of the year, we hope to have at least a dozen vehicles in the fleet.” Mr. Namboodiry said customers so far had not been offered an alternative to plastic. The Green Forum aims to make jute bags accessible to customers by making them directly available through vehicles. The bags are priced between Rs.15-30. The Chalta Phirta Campaign will travel all over Delhi. The Chief Minister and the British High Commissioner to India, Sir Richard Stagg, also unveiled a 600-foot-long wall mural on the boundary wall of the British High Commission in Chanakyapuri. The mural calls for global action on climate change ahead of the climate summit in Copenhagen in December 2009.
