Five writers chosen for Sahitya Academy awards

18 works under different categories selected for the book awards


BANGALORE: The Karnataka Sahitya Academy has selected five writers — A.R. Mitra, Hasanabi Beelagi, Vishnu Naika, Mallikarjuna Hiremath and Lakshmana — for its annual honorary awards for the year 2008 in recognition of their contribution to Kannada literature. It has selected 18 works in different categories for the annual book awards for 2007.

Announcing the awards, chairperson of the sahitya academy, M.H. Krishnaiah, told presspersons here on Friday that the executive committee of the academy had selected the awards unanimously. The honorary awards would carry a purse of Rs. 10,000 each while the book awards would carry a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each.

A citation, shawl and memento were common for both the awards.

Keshavamurthy (Devarugala Taime Sariyilla-essay), Sangamesha Koti (Dubai emba Mayanagari –travelogue), Ganesha Aminghad (Bannada Badukina Chinnada Dinagalu-biography/autobiography), K.V. Tirumalesh (Ullekha-literary criticism), S. Umapathi (Nandappadevara Prabhucharitre-compilation), N.S. Bharatanahalli (Robot Mattu Chihnegalu - children’s literature), Nagesh Hegde (Aachina Lokakke Kaalakosha-science literature), Halathi Somashekhar (Mahila Chaluvali Saamaajika Mattu Saamskritika Hinnele-humanities), S. Shettar (Shangam-Tamilagam mattu Kannada Naadu Nudi- research),Chandrakantha Pokale (Nelaveddu Badiyitu-translation of creative literature), P.V. Narayana (Adhikara Mimamse-translation non creative literature), Basavaraja Hoogara (Tatrani- maiden work), C.H. Hnaumantharaya (Vakeelarobbara Vagairegalu-miscellaneous) and Fr. I. Anthappa (Origin of Christianity In and Around Srirangapattana – translation from Kannada to English).
