Four years and one crore for power theft

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: In what is being claimed as the highest ever sentence awarded in a power theft case, a special court dealing with electricity-related cases at Dwarka here has sentenced a father-son duo, Pooran Chand Lakra and Mukesh Lakra, to rigorous imprisonment for four years and seven-and-a-half months respectively.

The court also imposed a cumulative fine of nearly Rs.1 crore on them. While Pooran must shell out Rs.45.96 lakh, Mukesh has to cough up Rs.22.98 lakh. A further fine of Rs.30.64 lakh in civil liability has also been imposed on them. In the event of default of payment, the two will be required to undergo simple imprisonment for an additional six months.

The court also barred Pooran from getting electricity from any source for three months. Pooran owns a plastic bicycle wheels manufacturing factory in West Delhi. A BSES raid discovered a power theft of over 102 kW occurring in the factory. The power, which was being siphoned off for industrial uses, was obtained by directly feeding into the BSES mains. Investigations revealed that the site was occupied by Pooran Lakra (user) and Mukesh Lakra (registered consumer).
