Tekkali: Ministers unanimous over nominating Revathipathi’s wife

HYDERABAD: The Praja Rajyam and the Communist Party of India are likely to pave way for unanimous election in Tekkali Assembly constituency, which fell vacant after the death of its MLA elect K. Revathipathi, if the Congress nominates his wife as its candidate.

The two parties dropped enough hints to this effect in the Assembly when the House adopted a condolence motion as mark of respect to the deceased who died a day before the newly elected MLAs took the oath in the Assembly.

Ministers D. Prasada Rao, S. Vijayarama Raju and J. Geeta Reddy proposed that Revathipathi’s wife be elected unanimously.

Speaking on the motion moved by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, they appealed to political parties to extend cooperation as they did in such cases earlier.

Mr. Prasada Rao recalled that whenever a sitting MLA died, the custom was to facilitate unanimous election of an eligible member from the family.

Positive response

The Praja Rajyam and the CPI gave a positive response to the proposal immediately while CPI (M) member J. Ranga Reddy said he would communicate his party’s decision after consulting the leadership.

The Telugu Desam Party, however, did not reveal its stand on the issue and Opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu who spoke earlier expressed deep sympathies to the family.

The Chief Minister said the government and Congress party would stand by the family.

Other speakers pleaded for help to the family as the deceased left behind wife, three daughters and a son. Congress member T. G. Venkatesh suggested periodical medical check-ups to MLAs as a rule as many of them were in poor health.
