CII’s pilot project to reduce pollution

MADURAI: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Madurai Zone, plans to implement a pilot project on reducing environmental pollution in Harvey Nagar in the city.

The project would be on the lines of E-Lawn being implemented in Chennai wherein concerted efforts would be taken to reduce air and noise pollution, better water management, solid waste management and energy conservation, its chairman Bharath K.S. said.

The project was launched by Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine at a meeting organised in connection with the World Environment Day here on Friday. “We will try to bring the local government, non-governmental organisations and industry together for a sustainable development. CII will find sponsors for the project from its members,” Mr. Bharath said. Based on the success of the project, to be implemented in 10 to 12 months, it would be replicated in other parts of the city, he added.

S. Rajamohan, convenor of CII environmental panel, said that tree saplings would be planted in the identified area with the help of Dhan Foundation. Efforts would be taken to improve the groundwater table by implementing rainwater harvesting and recycling waste water for use in gardens. “We will also try to put up solar lights as an effort to conserve energy,” he said.

President and director of Scope e Knowledge, Chandu Nair; joint convenor, environmental panel, CII, S. Chandran; and Professor and Head of Department of Bio Energy, Madurai Kamaraj University, K. Muthuchelian, were among those who addressed the meeting.
