State to promote biofuel buses

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The Government wants the State Road Transport Corporations running at least 5,000 buses on biofuel by next year so as to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and conserve environment.

Speaking at an interactive workshop on climate change organised by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) on the occasion of World Environment Day here on Friday, Transport Secretary M.K. Shankaralinge Gowda said KSRTC has already been running 1,500 buses on biofuel. The numbers should reach 5,000 next year, he said.

Also, the Government will compel all the autorickshaws in the State to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) gradually.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa flagged off three KSRTC buses which run on biofuel.
