Bharathiar University kiosk at Erode Collectorate goes kaput

Staff Reporter

ERODE: Bharathiar University’s touch-screen kiosk at Erode Collectorate stands out. Its distinction that of being closed for about two years now.

By remaining under lock and key, the kiosk defeats the very purpose for which it was set up: to help students.

A few years ago, the University set up a kiosk at the Collectorate so that students seeking information about the university, courses therein and affiliated colleges could access if from the touch-screen computer.

It set up the kiosk in front of the State Bank of India and asked the latter to look after the basic maintenance. That was the end of it. There was no follow up and maintenance.

Sources in the State Bank of Indias branch say their job was only to provide power supply and security.

Now with the announcement of Plus-Two results, students looking for information have to either approach the University in person or seek it in website.

Both the choices are difficult, the latter especially for rural students, who most often are information-challenged than their urban counterparts.

Reopening the kiosk will be of great help, say students. Their demand is justified also because many students and their parents visit Collectorate on Mondays to represent grievances at the weekly grievance day meeting.

The university authorities say they will reopen the kiosk at the earliest.

Public Relations Officer N.J. Murali Mohan says they had to shut down because the touch-screen computer went kaput.

Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam says the new computer will have the latest software and updated information on the university.
