Girl dies, 32 complain of diarrhoea

Staff Reporter

Tiruvannamalai: A girl from a village near Cheyyar died and 32 others complained of diarrhoea and vomiting after they reportedly consumed water from an old well.

Anitha (12), daughter of Venkatesan of Thennampattu, complained of diarrhoea at school on Friday. Teachers told her to go home. As her parents were not in the house, Anitha could not immediately seek medical help. When her condition deteriorated, neighbours rushed her to a hospital, but she died on the way.

Meanwhile, several villagers also complained of diarrhoea. Health Officials organised a medical camp, which continued to receive patients even on Saturday.

K.S.T. Suresh, Deputy Director of Cheyyar health district, said that a total of 32 persons suffering from diarrhoea were treated at the camp and five among them were admitted to Cheyyar Government Hospital. It is said that the villagers had drunk water from an old well, which was pumped to an old overhead tank.

Dr. Suresh said, “Water from the well has sent to King Institute, Chennai, for testing. We have asked people not to use the water from the well. Authorities of TWAD Board and Block Development Office are taking measures to provide water from alternative sources.”
