Amul beats recession

Corporate Reporter

CHENNAI: Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (CGMMF), the largest dairy co-operative in the country popularly known as Amul, has proved again that efficiency of co-operatives can successfully counter recessionary trends of the economy.

For the third consecutive year, it has posted a double digit growth in turnover reaching Rs. 6,700 crore in 2008-09. It has been stated that the unduplicated turnover of the dairy co-operatives of Gujarat would be about Rs. 10,000 crore.

GCMMF has chalked out a plan which envisages that the turnover of dairy-cooperatives will reach a turnover of Rs. 27,000 crore by 2020.

The plan is backed by relevant strategies in co-opearative working, increasing productivity of milk cattle and higher processing infrastructure to handle the peak milk procurement of 195 lakh litres a day. It has been stated that special emphasis will also be given to capture liquid milk market of major metro cities. In order to enhance the visibility of brand ‘Amul’, the federation has expanded its network of Amul parlours to more than 4,000 across the country.
