BHUBANESWAR: Five important heritage sites of the State would come under the care and control of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) soon. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting here this week with Chief Secretary A.K.Tripathy in the chair. The sites are Birachi Narayan temple of Buguda, Bimaleswar temple of Huma, Nrusimhanath temple in Paikamal, Nilamadhab temple of Kantilo and Chudangagada fort. The meeting that was attended by the Commissioner of Culture R.N. Dash, representatives of the ASI, district collectors, Superintendent of the State Archaeology besides officials from the departments of forests, revenue and tourism expressed its deep concern over encroachment of the heritage sites causing bottlenecks for conservation activities and tourism promotion. The meeting further decided to undertake periphery development programmes for Sisupalgarh, Lingaraj temple, Chudangagarh and Baraha temple of Jajpur to explore tourism promotion prospects. The encroachments around the Lingaraj temple complex here would be demolished on a war-footing basis, it was learnt. Construction of towers by mobile telephone service providers near the heritage sites have posed a serious threat to the heritage conservation and beautification measures, felt several officials in the meeting. So far 140 applications have been received from different parts of the state to have approval to erect such towers near heritage sites, the meeting revealed.
