Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: The capital city will play host to the fifth edition of the Indian Environment Congress in December this year. The organising committee of the event, which met here on Friday, decided that the three-day event, beginning on December 14, would have ‘Environment Management’ as the theme. Focal areasSustainable development, climate change and atmospheric pollution would be among the focal areas. The meeting decided to invite delegates from research institutions, universities, higher education centres and environmental organisations from all over the country to attend the congress. An open forum for mediapersons and environmental activists would be a highlight. Unplanned public workThe meeting observed that unplanned public works in the city were blocking drainage channels, leading to waterlogging and environmental problems during monsoon. This, it was said, was responsible for the outbreak of infectious diseases. ParticipantsPresident of the Congress P.R. Mahadevan Pillai presided over the meeting. Representatives of government departments, institutions and environmental organisations were present. Director, Information and Public Relations, M. Nandakumar led the discussions.
