NHRC orders 3-lakh relief for custody death

J. Balaji

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission has directed the Assam Government to provide a compensation of Rs.3 lakh to the family of Manoj Chundi who died of gunshot injuries while in police custody in a Dispur police station after his arrest in a dacoity case in May 2002.

“The State Government should send the compliance report within eight weeks,” the Commission ordered.

While the local police claimed that Chundi had died in cross-firing between his associates and the police, Crime Branch CID officers who probed the case raised doubts over the version.

Ammunition

The CB-CID team found that no loss of ammunition was shown in the police records and no person living near the place of cross-firing heard any gunshots.

Later the Commission issued a notice to the Assam Government on providing monetary relief to the victim’s family and the Government agreed that Chundi’s kin indeed needed assistance. The State Government asked the Commission to fix the quantum of relief as it deemed fit.
