Navy reaffirms commitment to environment

Staff Reporter

Kochi: The Southern Naval Command celebrated World Environment Day with a range of activities spread over two days.

On Friday, INS Venduruthy, which pioneered the concept of eco-friendly waste management within the Naval Base put up a tableau at the entrance to the base, depicting the bleak future awaiting the planet, if urgent steps are not initiated for water conservation. Another tableau greeting visitors to the base was a withered and dying tree. This image served as a stark reminder of the mankind’s cruelty to Nature.

Later in the day, younger members of the naval community staged a street play at several venues within the base.

The Navy personnel also demonstrated their commitment to society when about 50 volunteers gathered to clean up the water front at Fort Kochi on Saturday. The volunteers collected garbage from the empty promenade, braving the morning showers to give this popular tourist joint a hygienic look.
